Irene Kattou is one of our artists-in-residence for the Making Womanhood programme, which is realized in collaboration with Youth Makerspace Larnaka. Her art piece is titled “Othered Desire” and will be exhibited during the Making Womanhood Artist-in-Residence exhibition on Saturday, 2 October, 2021 at 17:00 to 19:30. The event is part of the Mediatized Portraits of Women Speaker series, implemented in the framework of the POWER project (Portraits Of Women Empowered Representations), which is funded by the US Embassy in Cyprus. “Othered Desire”
The claim of the project is a radical one: Womanhood in Cyprus has never been able to progress in a truly emancipatory way, as it is bound up by the ideological male, ethnonational state narrative which it serves. More specifically, ‘Othered Desired’ looks into the discourse of female sexual politics of the island.
Having as a starting point that post-colonial countries are male dominated spaces, the following art project tries to tackle womanhood in Cyprus with a Foucauldian approach, that is a reverse historicity; that is, not what womanhood is defined as ideologically in Cypriot society, but rather what that absence in public discourse translates to and therefore informs it as an identity. More specifically, the project explores how the female gaze and female desire has been absent from media representations. Motherhood in Cyprus has been often the only way female desire can be expressed and it has been appropriated to advance conflict narratives.
Only a subject who is in control of their desires can be truly free. And only if the space for discourse of the female desire is able to exist women can take control of their life and choices. Ultimately, the project ‘Othered Desired’ examines this violence of absent discourse in the context of the sexual, its power dynamics and its potential to criticise the status quo. One must critically examine the political, religious, and social structures of Cypriot society that have emerged since the establishment of the nation state to understand how the sexual, is political.
About the artist
Multimedia artist Irini Kattou (b. 2000) through her work explores the relationship of the body and culture and how it produces the embodiment experience. Her philosophical interests are phenomenology, feminism, and queer theory which in turn inform her art. Using surrealist influences, she seeks to investigate and destabilise narratives of ‘truth’ by making her audience uneasy. With her work, she actively encourages raptures of subversion to dominant notions, as seen in her work (M)othered (2020) which investigate the construction of women’s identity in post-conflict, post- colonial spaces.

O ισχυρισμός του έργου είναι ριζοσπαστικός: Η Γυναικεία ζωή στην Κύπρο δεν μπόρεσε ποτέ να προοδεύσει με έναν πραγματικά χειραφετητικό τρόπο, καθώς συνδέεται ιδεολογικά με την αντρική, εθνοτική κρατική αφήγηση, την οποία και εξυπηρετεί. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το «Othered Desired» εξετάζει τον λόγο της γυναικείας σεξουαλικής πολιτικής του νησιού.
Έχοντας ως αφετηρία ότι οι μετα-αποικιoκρατικές χώρες είναι χώροι που κυριαρχούνται από τους άνδρες, το ακόλουθο έργο τέχνης προσπαθεί να αντιμετωπίσει τη γυναικεία φύση στην Κύπρο με μια Φουκωική προσέγγιση, μια αντίστροφη ιστορικότητα. Δηλαδή, δεν καταπιάνεται με αυτό που ορίζεται ως γυναικείο ιδεολογικά στην κυπριακή κοινωνία, αλλά μάλλον σε τι μεταφράζεται η απουσία της γυναίκας στο δημόσιο λόγο και επομένως πώς την ενημερώνει ως ταυτότητα. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το έργο διερευνά πώς το γυναικείο βλέμμα και η γυναικεία επιθυμία απουσίαζαν από τις αναπαραστάσεις των μέσων ενημέρωσης. Η μητρότητα στην Κύπρο ήταν συχνά ο μόνος τρόπος με τον οποίο μπορεί να εκφραστεί η γυναικεία επιθυμία και έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί για να προωθήσει διηγήσεις συγκρούσεων και πολέμων.
Μόνο ένα άτομο που έχει τον έλεγχο των επιθυμιών του μπορεί να είναι πραγματικά ελεύθερο. Και μόνο αν ο χώρος για τον λόγο της γυναικείας επιθυμίας είναι σε θέση να υπάρχει, οι γυναίκες μπορούν να πάρουν τον έλεγχο της ζωής και των επιλογών τους. Τελικά, το έργο «Othered Desired» εξετάζει την απουσία του λόγου ως μορφή βίας στο πλαίσιο του σεξουαλικού, της δυναμικής του και της δυνατότητάς του να επικρίνει το status quo. Πρέπει κανείς να εξετάσει κριτικά τις πολιτικές, θρησκευτικές και κοινωνικές δομές της κυπριακής κοινωνίας που έχουν προκύψει από την ίδρυση του έθνου κράτους για να καταλάβει πώς το σεξουαλικό είναι πολιτικό.
Για την καλλιτέχνη
Η καλλιτέχνης πολυμέσων Ειρήνη Κάττου (γ. 2000) μέσα από το έργο της διερευνά τη σχέση σώματος και πολιτισμού και πώς αυτό παράγει την εμπειρία της ενσάρκωσης. Τα φιλοσοφικά της ενδιαφέροντα είναι η φαινομενολογία, ο φεμινισμός και η queer θεωρία που με τη σειρά τους ενημερώνουν την τέχνη της. Χρησιμοποιώντας υπερρεαλιστικές επιρροές, επιδιώκει να διερευνήσει και να αποσταθεροποιήσει μέσα από τη δουλειά της αφηγήσεις σε κυρίαρχες έννοιες, όπως φαίνεται στο έργο της (Μ)othered (2020) που ερευνά την κατασκευή της ταυτότητας των γυναικών σε μεταπολεμικούς, μετα-αποικιοκρατικούς χώρους.
